STINSON BEACH MEMORIAL

As previously presented the “Waves” concept for our Stinson Beach Memorial project design is based on the form and symbolism of waves in the realms of nature, history, memory, and personal feeling. In this final submittal we’ve had time to develop our design to reinforce the formal aspects of a memorial that reflects its coastal environment while celebrating the individuality of the people that have created the unique Stinson Beach community. Beyond design intentions there are the special conditions of the site made available for the memorial which include the challenge of drawing people back to a small area tucked away behind the Community Center Chapel. In addition there are the issues of announcing the memorial location at the street, the narrow access points on the way to the rear of the Chapel, and preserving views from windows inside the Chapel over and through the memorial space. Finally there are the questions of construction cost, constructability and ease of maintenance. In these accompanying notes to the larger drawings requested by the Committee we address these considerations.
